Top Ten… Bad Bookish Habits
A love of books and reading does not come without its down sides. This week’s top ten looks at those bad bookish habits which seem to be a recurring feature in my reading life.
1.
I won’t buy any new books until… ooooh a sale!
Severe restraint required. You will buy books you neither want nor will read any time soon. Stay away!
2.
I won’t buy any new books until… ooooh shiny!
There’s nothing like a brand new shiny book staring at you from amongst its shelf-friends to make you want to take it away and give it a new home. Even if you don’t need it and have far too much to read already.
3.
Bought in brand new hardback, read five years later
Shiny shiny hardbacks may be pretty but they’re damn expensive! Especially when you don’t read them for the next five years to come.
4.
Organised bookshelves? You’re living the dream!
Bookshelves that are three rows deep and so over-packed that when one book is pulled out an entire row tumbles out in its wake is not congruous with a liking for pristine and unbent books.
5.
Floorshelves are not the next big thing
Having stacks (and stacks and stacks) of books lying around on the floor is not cool and makes you look like a crazy hoarder. Add more bookshelves to shopping list.
6.
Reading is not a priority
Reading really shouldn’t come before work, studying, friends and family but damn, it’s a really good book!
7.
Currently reading: Everything!
Just because a book is looking at you doesn’t mean you need to pick it up and start reading it. Especially when you’re currently reading five other books!
8.
Schedule? What schedule?
Posts done in advance?! That’s crazy talk! But would go some way to bringing a bit of organisation to book blogging.
9.
I love my shiny hardback and… ooooh coffee!
Incredibly clumsy? Pristine books and coffee are not a match made in heaven.
10.
Thou shalt not judge a book by its cover
But it’s just sooo pretty!

This post is spot-on! I’m guilty of almost everything here, especially buying books on sale and reading whilst drinking coffee. But who can resist coffee and reading when it’s raining outside, right? Sheeesh. lol

Exactly! But boo hoo I just put a coffee thumb print on the page edges of The Republic of Thieves. Sad times!!!!!

Oh no!!! Well at least it won’t be a big mark. I had grease stains on mine before before, ughhh

I try and then I get new books and the cycle begins again! An eternal loop of bad habits!

Haha I love it. Yes oh shinny. I have first came out books I bought 6 years ago and haven’t picked up yet. They are never intended to sit for so long it just happens. Work in progress. I too also need to get new shelves…but I need more space for said shelves…I will say mine might be full but all visible and orderly in their own way, kind of like tetras book version. My Top Ten

That’s exactly how it is – organised chaos! Just don’t touch them or, like in #4, they all end up on the floor! And then that messes up my crazy hoarder floorshelf 😦

This is a great list. LOL I think the only one that we don’t have in common is the schedule one. If I don’t schedule, no posts go up. I used to be able to fly by the seat of my pants, but all that changed for me four years ago.
Your #3 is especially true for me–even if it’s an e-book or a paperback. I buy it with every intention of reading it right away, but then it sits there. Someone once told me that it’s just a case of letting a book marinate for awhile, so it will be even better when we do get around to reading it. 😉

Oh that’s beautiful. Yes, I like that! I’ve set entire shelves of books to marinate. And I definitely have all intentions of scheduling but my schedule for scheduling always goes out of the window xD Ah, such is life!

haha, I love your post! I have bought hardcovers, forgot to read them, then bought the paperback because I was like “oh, I haven’t read this one yet!” It’s an addiction… I need to find a Book Buyers Anonymous meeting.

Thanks 😀 I’ve definitely done that! I’ve even accidentally bought two of the same when the cover artwork has changed.. Oops!

Hahaha, I love your list! All of these are so me, too :p But I am the worst about 3, 5 and 10. Especially 5. If you could see my bedroom right now, you’d be horrified :p

Thanks 😀 Oh dear! At least we’re all in the same boat! My floorshelf is even worse at the moment because I’m decorating!

Oh my… I am guilty of so many of these too!!!! The worst is the buying new hardcovers. I don’t mind buying paperbacks, or sale, or used books and not reading them for a while – but when I see those hardcover I bought years and years ago, sitting on the shelf, with that $25 tag!, I cringe.

I hate to think how much I’ve spent in total on books I’ve had for years and haven’t read! I’m almost certain it would make me cringe!

I agree with pretty much everything on here. I know my book buying habit is a little out of control, though I’m not really sure that’s one I actually want to quit 🙂

Great list! I totally suffer from #6, especially with studying but sometimes with going out as well. I’m not going to cancel any program for reading but sometimes I really do need a free day that I can spend reading.

Yes! I imagine telling people you’re staying in to read wouldn’t go down so well either!

lol #1 I had a book buying ban going on at the start of this year (it was meant to last until the end of the year). That didn’t go very well, because sales, really.
Also #4, what is this organisation you speak of? *scratches head*
Great list, it made me chuckle 🙂

Thanks 😀 Book buying bans never seem to work… at least for me! I blame those pesky authors who keep releasing amazing books 😛
