Top Ten… Book to Movie Adaptations I’d Love to See
Having not read half the books which are soon to become films, this week’s Top Ten will be looking at the book to movie adaptations I would love to see. These are the books that would make incredible films, fantastic TV series and fill that empty hole left when you finish them. So without further ado, here are this week’s Top Ten:
1.
by C.J. Sansom
The Matthew Shardlake novels would be an amazing series of films. Murder, mystery and a crime solving lawyer in the heart of Tudor England – what’s not to love?! This would make a cracking series too.
2.
by Joe Abercrombie
Couldn’t resist throwing in The Blade Itself. How awesome would Glokta be?! And surely we need a great anti-hero movie, everything’s always a bit Mary Sue on the big screen.
3.
by Ben Aaronovitch
A film following Peter Grant as he discovers there’s an even darker and more dangerous side to London – yes please! Gods and goddesses, riots and rebellions, wizards and vampires – I can see the whole series of films!
4.
by Pierce Brown
This book would just have to work on the big screen! It’s got everything – an awesome angst filled hero, an abundance of oppressed masses and more evil overlords than you can shake a stick at.
5.
by V.E. Schwab
What an awesome movie this would make! The super-anti-hero needs a place on our screens and Eli Cardale and Victor Vale fit the bill perfectly.
6.
by V.E. Schwab
And of course A Darker Shade of Magic would make the cut too! I would love to see Schwab’s Londons up on the big screen – the sumptuous and rich Red London, the gritty and bleak Grey London, the harsh and cruel White London, and the mysterious and dark Black London.
7.
by Karen Maitland
It’s 1348, England, and nine strangers are trying to outrun the plague. Except they’re being picked off one by one and the most likely villain is already part of their group. Everyone’s a liar, no one can be trusted, and this would make an awesome film!
8.
by Scott Lynch
A swashbuckling, sword-fighting, rip-roaring tale of misadventure – this would be an incredible adaptation. Not least because Camorr would be like Venice on acid.
9.
by Robin Hobb
The Liveship Traders trilogy is a beautiful fantasy adventure. With (Live)ships, pirates and a courageous heroine, this would surely be a fantastic adaptation.
10.
The Final Empire
by Brandon Sanderson
And my list of movies wouldn’t be complete without throwing the Mistborn series in there. With one of the most unique magic systems in fantasy fiction, one which would showcase the most amazing fight scenes, this film would surely be a hit. Even if the film was only half as good as the books.

A The Blade Itself movie would be very inserting, I think maybe a series would work better because of the complexity of it – either one though, I’d love to see. And weren’t the rights for Lies of Lock Lamora sold years ago? Scott’s just waiting to see if the company does anything with it?
Mistborn movie would be great! (I’m pretty sure that the Mistborn game is still in the workings) Steelheart would be another great title for the big screen.

Yes many of these would probably be far better as a series! Ooh I didn’t know about that – fingers crossed.. that they do a good job ofc! And I think all of Brandon Sanderson’s writing would make awesome movies!

The Blade Itself would be a very kick ass movie, indeed, and ought to make the Shattered Sea series as well! And of course Mistborn would be really great to watch, especially when they burn metals and “fly” around 😀

I know movies could never do them justice but it’d just be too damn cool!

Great list! I haven’t seen anyone going this direction with the topic. It needs to be said that some books only get attention because someone thought it would make a good movie. I haven’t read anything on your list but a few are living on my TBR right now. Thanks for the recs!

I think the movie rights to Red Rising might have been bought, though that could be companies snatching up anything that looks good to secure their investment…but I would love it if it eventually happened! I would also love an adaptation of the Peter Grant series! I’d heard they were supposedly planning a show? Either way, I’d take it 🙂

Clearly I’m out of the loop! But I certainly hope so! The Peter Grant series would definitely be better as a TV show 😀

Oh dear, this was about films and I’ve come away from it with about six new books on the TBR…
I’d love to see film versions of Half Bad, The Scorpio Races and All Fall Down. I’d also like to see a closer-to-the-books adaption of Percy Jackson.

Oops! That seems to happen to me on a weekly basis!
I haven’t actually read Percy Jackson.. maybe I should give it a try! (I haven’t seen its adaptation either but maybe that’s a good thing! 😛 )

Your entire list looks like my TBR list — I have so many of these (including the Shardlake series, Rivers of London, and Locke Lamora) sitting on my shelf, still to be read. I’m glad to hear you think they’d make good TV or movies… I’m looking forward to reading them all!

The Sansome books would be awesome and I would love to see them. Plus Rivers of London. The Lynch books I’m in two minds because if they picked somebody I didn’t like to play Jean I would be so upset!

That would be quite terrible indeed! Especially when they’re characters you really love and have a fixed image of in your head!
